The principal attorney of Spataro & Associates, Stephen A. Spataro commands a wide range of expertise in the fields of copyright, trademark and related litigation with a heavy emphasis in the visual arts. Mr. Spataro's business and litigation experience has focused on intellectual property, entertainment, publishing, advertising, computers, electronics and related trades. Based in Santa Monica, California, he has an active trial practice in Federal and State Courts from San Francisco to San Diego.

Mr. Spataro has bar membership in all United States courts in California; the Ninth Federal Circuit; and the United States Supreme Court. He has substantial jury trial and complex business litigation experience.

Background

During his legal career, Mr. Spataro has represented a full range of individuals and businesses. His larger clients have included major corporations in an array of fields, including stock photography agencies, computer and multimedia companies, photographers and other visual artists, and visual artists' trade associations. He has also represented producers and directors, manufacturers, film distributors, and others who have copyright, trademark and related interests.

Mr. Spataro has been responsible for a number of important court decisions in the copyright and visual arts areas. In one, he established the rule that a single copyright notice in a periodical, even though published in a separate format, protects all the contributions. He was profiled in American Photographer Magazine (December 1987) as one of the three most seasoned litigators in the United States photography law field.

Mr. Spataro has spoken widely on intellectual property topics and has served as speaker at continuing legal education programs including the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Professional lectures include the American Society of Journalists and Authors; Advertising Photographers of America (Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu); Brooks Institute of Photography; Art Center (Pasadena); and University of California, Los Angeles and Irvine.
